Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Frankish, culture, ca. 6th to 12th century CE. A forged iron horse bit formed with long hook-ended cheek pieces. A twisted bar crosses between the cheek pieces, and below are discs mounted on linked hook arms. These discs still rotate and were intended for the horse to run its tongue over as a calming method. The movement of all the iron parts emphasizes the excellent condition of this piece - possibly this was deposited in a grave hence the nice preservation and intact condition. Horses were highly valued as beasts of burden and transport, and markers of wealth and prestige - horse tack was an integral part of riding and a significant symbol of horse ownership. Horse equipment such as spurs, bits, and sometimes sacrificed horses, were buried with the deceased as part of lavish burial rites. Size: 8.75" L x 5" W (22.2 cm x 12.7 cm); 12" H (30.5 cm) on included custom stand.
