Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Western Europe, England & France, Medieval to Post Medieval Period, ca. 13th to 17th century CE. A collection of 6 assorted boot spurs with rowel spikes - some still rotate within the neck! Spurs evolved from a singular pointed "prick" to this rowel design which became popular in the 13th and 14th century and larger rowels are dated to medieval times and smaller and star shapes are usually post-medieval. Spurs became symbols of chivalry and honor for European knights (hence the larger size on earlier rowels), and disgraced knights would have their spurs broken off by the enemy. Size: 5" L x 3.5" W (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
