Description:

East Asia, China, from Han to Qing Dynasty, ca. 175 BCE to 1600 CE. A group of six bronze, copper, and leaded bronze coins, each from a different dynasty. The coins are mounted on white cardstock with written labels and dates. From top left are: Western Han, Wang Mang, Tang, Northern Song, Ming, and Qing (Ching). Each is cast with a square opening through the center. These coins demonstrate the remarkable uniformity of style across millennia, especially compared to the monetary systems of Europe. The casting process expedited coin production immensely; for example, the annual output of coinage in 1085 under the Song dynasty was over six billion coins! Size of largest coin: 0.97" W (2.5 cm); smallest coin: 0.91" W (2.3 cm); size of cardstock: 6.8" L x 5" W (17.3 cm x 12.7 cm)
