Description:

Native American, United States, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. A collection of 5 hand-knapped chert tools, used as hoes, choppers, or scrapers. The first is shaped like an axe head, bearing a flared cutting edge that tapers to the rounded butt end. The second is a scraper or chopping tool with a straight cutting edge and sharpened periphery. Next is a massive petaloid blade with a slightly convex side - perhaps a scrapping tool. The fourth has a triangular cross section and tapering blade and the last is a large creamy pink stemmed spear of knife blade with notched shoulders. The pink-orange chert displays Fusulinida fossils in the surface that likely formed during the Permian period - nearly 300 million years ago. These were calcareous single celled organisms with an external shell - which is what we see trapped in this stone - the shells cut into spiraling cross-sections that add a mesmerizing natural pattern to the already colorful chert! Size (largest blade): 7.5" L x 3" W (19 cm x 7.6 cm); (case): 16.25" L x 12.25" W (41.3 cm x 31.1 cm)
