Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima and Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine gathering of 6 hand-built pottery figures from 2 distinct cultures in ancient West Mexico. First is a seated Jalisco figure with 2 body perforations, shoulder scarification pellets, and an elongated head. Next are 5 Colima figures: a petite standing 'gingerbread' figure; a standing woman with one arm held to her neck; a reclining figure with incised motifs across the waist and thighs; a standing female figure with both arms to her womb; and a large, standing 'gingerbread' figure with a conical head. Size of largest: 4.1" W x 7.4" H (10.4 cm x 18.8 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

  • Condition: Largest figure has left arm reattached at shoulder, right arm reattached at elbow, and top of head reattached just above nasal bridge; standing female with arms to womb has head reattached at neckline; standing female with arm to neck has repairs to arms; all with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; remaining 3 figures are intact and very good. All figures have light abrasions, encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits throughout, and great preservation to overall figural forms.
