Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A lovely gathering of 5 hand-built pottery zoomorphic creatures from the Colima and Maya cultures. First are 3 Colima birds: a standing effigy with incised wings and annular eyes, a lozenge-shaped bird with 5 petite perforations, and a spherical figural vessel with an avian head bearing a lengthy beak. The 2 Maya monkeys are each mold-formed whistles: 1 with a three-dimensional form holding its arms above its head, and the other a plaque-type figure with protruding flanges and a grinning visage. Both whistles' mouthpieces are situated along the bottom of the verso and create pleasing sounds when air is blown in. Size of largest (monkey with arms over head): 2.96" W x 3.94" H (7.5 cm x 10 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

  • Condition: All pieces have small chips and minor abrasions, with light fading to pigment where applicable, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to zoomorphic forms. Both Maya monkey whistles still create pleasing sounds.
