Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A splendid ensemble of 4 stone intaglios, each hand-carved with a figural image. First, the largest stone displays a deep hue of green and the bust of a left-facing man with a curly beard and laurel crown. Next, the red jasper intaglio features helmeted Apollo standing nude as he grasps a bow in one hand and his lyre in the other. Alternatively, the translucent carnelian presents the Dioscuri, or Castor and Pollux, both helmeted and armed with a spear and a sword as they stand contrapposto and face one another. Last, the blue agate stone exhibits a satyr carrying a child. Size of largest (bearded man): 0.5" W x 0.6" H (1.3 cm x 1.5 cm)
