Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE; Western Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful ensemble of 4 carnelian intaglios: 2 Roman and 2 from the Neoclassical period. The Roman intaglios depict the head of a helmeted soldier and Minerva - Greek Athena - the goddess of wisdom, justice, and victory. Alternatively, the 2 Neoclassical stones display the image of a rooster eating a scorpion and a nude putto between 2 birds. The latter is set into a modern 14-karat gold bezel. Size of largest (putto with birds): 0.6" W x 0.5" H (1.5 cm x 1.3 cm)
