Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Pre-Contact period, ca. 15th to 18th century CE. A collection of 4 shell tools, carved into blades for use as adzes. Adze heads are typically attached to a hand-carved wooden handle to serve as cutting tools ideal for shaping wood to make canoes. While stone heads may have been used for more labor intensive work, shell adzes were lighter and could have specialized in delicate woodworking tasks. Size: 3.5" L x 1.5" W (8.9 cm x 3.8 cm)
