Description:

**Originally Listed At $275**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1945 CE. A tin ex-voto painting offered to Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos (Nuestra Senora de San Juan de los Lagos) showing a man and woman praying to the Virgin Mary. Ex-votos are little story paintings indicative of healing or blessing popular in Mexican visual culture. These votive paintings were hung in a church or home in order to celebrate and give thanks for the recovery of an individual from an illness or unfortunate situation. Here, the Spanish inscription describes the man's stomachache that was so painful that he visited 8 doctors, if cured he promised to honor the miracle. The city of San Juan de los Lagos has a special church with a 16th century image of the Virgin Mary and is the second most visited pilgrimage site in Mexico- a separate room in the 19th century had to be built to display these ex-votos and offerings! Size: 9.5" L x 7" W (24.1 cm x 17.8 cm)
