Description:

Northwestern Europe, England, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. A great assortment of early locksmithing items: 3 barrel locks with spring mechanisms and a key, all made from leaded bronze. Each barrel lock functions with a bolt and inner spring mechanism and an arm extends from the bolt to hold the bar shackle in place, and opposite the bolt opening is a keyhole. The key in this collection is formed by a grooved shaft with a transverse bit that would have fit into a barrel lock keyhole to literally push the bolt out. This type of 'push-key barrel lock' was a relatively simple but effective theft deterrent. An accompanying label indicates one lock was found in the Thames and the key was found in Wiltshire. Size (largest lock): 1.5" L x 0.85" W (3.8 cm x 2.2 cm)
