Description:

First time at auction…

Roman, Republic to Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century BCE to 3rd century CE. An oval glass intaglio of a quadriga chariot set in a brass bezel that was part of a ring - the remains of the shank protruding from the shoulders. Finely incised into the citrine glass this is an image of a charioteer, possibly the goddess Victory or Sol, the sun god, facing left with one arm raised and 4 horses in front. This triumphant scene was a popular motif and similar glass and precious stone intaglios were produced to wear, while quadriga (4 horse chariots) were sculpted into architecture and painted on pottery. Size: 0.5" L x 0.3" W (1.3 cm x 0.8 cm)
