**First Time At Auction**

Western Europe, The Netherlands, Dutch, ca. late 16th to mid-19th century CE. A fine collection of 22 mold-formed clay pipe fragments of minimalist designs that were used for smoking tobacco. Each fragmentary pipe has a conical tobacco receptacle, with some bearing either small or large pieces of their original stems, and others with remains of the original footrest beneath the receptacle. Some pipes bear smooth, unadorned surfaces while others flaunt intricate raised designs of faces, figures, animals, or raised patterns. Size of largest (longest stem): 6.2" L x 0.7" W (15.7 cm x 1.8 cm)

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: All items are fragments of larger compositions. One fragment with a longer stem repaired from a few large pieces with chips to stem tip and resurfacing with overpainting along break lines. All items have chips and abrasions, with minor softening to some finer details where applicable, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
