Description:

**Originally Listed At $350**

North America, United States, ca. 1917 to 1918 CE. A WWI era trench periscope constructed of wood, metal, and glass mirrors, for American troops to peer over the trenches. The construction is a simple hollow rectangular box with two square mirrors set into opposing ends. A metal hook with an attached cord enables the periscope to be secured to a belt. A wingnut attaches to an adjustable arm with a pointed end that could be inserted into the side of the trench to prop up the scope. The wood was painted a taupe color to blend into the natural environment. These periscopes were handy to see the enemy without being exposed to gunfire. The periscope could also be paired with a binocular at the top to see even more clearly! This periscope still functions and is a fascinating piece of military history. Size: 14.5" L x 2.25" W (36.8 cm x 5.7 cm)
