West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, late 20th century CE. A carved wooden staff made to be carried and danced with by priestesses and priests in the Shango (Sango) cult. Shango is the Yoruba deity of thunder and lightning, and the figure on the staff represents one of the deity's followers. The one here shows a woman in a skirt holding a dead chicken, with a large headdress rising from her elaborate coiffure. Size: 4.8" W x 17.5" H (12.2 cm x 44.4 cm)
