Description:

**Originally listed for $250**

Papua New Guinea, Sepik River, ca. third quarter of the 20th century CE. A finely carved wooden headrest depicting an animorphic critter, most likely a native slow-moving cuscus, with a very long body, a curly tail, eyes comprised of shells, and a long proboscis, in a prone position on all fours. The cuscus is an adorable tree-dwelling marsupial with a rounded head, small hidden ears, and a prehensile tail to assist it in climbing. Of course the beak-like form may suggest a bird, and given that today Papua New Guinea hosts 38 of the world's 43 avian species, a bird form would not be surprising; however, the tail and body suggest otherwise. A wonderful example, beautifully carved with a remarkably smooth surfaces and nice patina. Size: 19" L x 5.25" H (48.3 cm x 13.3 cm)
