Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, early 20th century CE. Hand carved coconut shell depicting three representations of the Hindu deity Rahu devouring the moon. According to legend, this event caused a lunar eclipse. On the top of this piece is a small copper or bronze amulet also depicting Rahu. The tradition of carving coconut shells began in the 19th century when itinerant traders and sailors were looking for a means to pass the time and created keepsakes for their loved ones. Nails and glass shards were used to create the intricate carvings. The individual who created this example clearly possessed expert technique! Size: 6" in diameter.
