Description:

North America, Plains, ca. 1910s to 1930s CE. A petite tipi (also teepee or tepee) with a cover made from native-tanned skin and decorated with staggered fish-shaped motifs comprised of glass trade beads of orange, cobalt blue, and sky blue hues as well as tassels made from wrapped porcupine quills that were dyed red, metal beads, and animal hair that was dyed green. Given that most tipis are relatively plain, decorated examples like this one are particularly special. The Sioux word tipi means "used to live in" - and indeed, these structures were either seasonal or permanent dwellings. Of course this example, being of a smaller size, was likely used for play. In addition, tipis were and continue to be an expression of Plains identity - both artistic and cultural. Size: 26" in diameter x 31.5" H (66 cm x 80 cm)

  • Condition: Expected fraying to the lower edge of the buckskin cover. A few minor stains to the hide. The hide is still nice and supple. Beading is in very good condition. Some minor wear to the quill wrapped tassels, but otherwise very good.
