Description:

Native American, possibly Comanche or Lakota (midwestern US), ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A hide-covered wooden saddle with a beautiful dark patina, used for horse riding, with a distinctive near-symmetrical form that indicates it was intended for a man - women's had a shorter cantle. The pommel and cantle may be elk horn, though it is difficult to tell because they are covered by hide. The hide is "green", untanned bison hide stretched with sinew and dried. The stirrups and leather girth (cinch strap) would be set in the space between the wooden sides of the saddle. Size: 17.6" W x 11.5" H (44.7 cm x 29.2 cm)

  • Condition: The hide surface has a rich patina with wear commensurate with age including some staining, deposits, and small tears/losses, notably around the lower joints. However overall, it is in nice condition and the stitching method used is very well preserved and clearly visible. The wood underneath is weathered but intact.
