Description:

Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid 20th century CE. A massive wooden anthropomorphic mask with a knobbed handle and stylized painted features. The peripheries are pierced and woven through with brown cassowary feathers. The eyes are made from discs of nacre with narrow slits in their centers for the wearer to see through. Two perforations next to the eyes also contain woven rings and long fiber cords. The surface is painted with beige, black, and white pigments. The domed forehead juts outward, and the nose ridge extends from the brow to a bulbous tip that is carved with bulging nostrils. A fantastic mask that likely represented an ancestral or spiritual figure and is well preserved with bold features! Size: 27.5" L x 12" W (69.8 cm x 30.5 cm)

Provenance: Purchased from Mac Laren Markowitz Gallery (former owner from 1989-2004)
