Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A dramatic, brightly painted wooden decorative carving of a seated figure. Presenting as a panel and painted on one side, the gorgeous piece depicts a highly stylized individual with their knees drawn up and elongated arms hanging to their sides from pointed shoulders. Capped with a tan-hued coiffure with vegetal reeds tied to each side in a pig-tail style, its annular head features an abstract visage of circular eyes surrounded by a curved decorative motif and a minimalistic mouth. The body of the figure is skillfully incised with a central diamond shape surrounded by jagged striations and a series of circular and undulating designs. Vibrant hues of russet, cream, and tan adorn the panel's mocha brown surface, while an annular drill hole with a vegetal reed strung through is featured at its top for suspension. Size: 10.75" W x 38" H (27.3 cm x 96.5 cm)
