Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, mid-20th century CE. A delightful carving of a large-beaked bird - probably a hornbill - standing atop an integrated platform. The bird's feet perch forward, its eyes bulging and beak downcurved to almost touch the chest. A ridged crest is carved up the bird's back. Yellow, white, and grey pigment make this piece bright. Size: 9.5" W x 18.25" H (24.1 cm x 46.4 cm)
