Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hefty mortar carved from rough grey stone with a round but stable base, tall walls, a thick rim, and a deep recessed groove meant for pulverizing various ingredients. The interior cavity is incredibly smooth to the touch and suggests this mortar was used countless times. This vessel is certainly utilitarian in its construction, though the beauty of its design lies in its simplicity. Size: 12.875" W x 7.75" H (32.7 cm x 19.7 cm).
