Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden dance helmet in the form of a large-feathered bird with a hand-woven reed cap portion. The rectangular body has thick wings projecting from the sides, a tab-shaped tail, and a cockatoo-shaped head with an aquiline beak. Dozens of small pierced slots along the wings and spine house several lengthy feathers of pale yellow and white hues, and each feather is removable. Size: 18.5" L x 7.5" W x 8.7" H (47 cm x 19 cm x 22.1 cm); 19.5" H (49.5 cm) with feathers inserted.
