Description:

Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A stunning carved wooden ancestor figure with both male and female attributes, striking facial paint (meant to indicate tattoos), and a headdress/coiffure composed of shells and real hair. The figure also has a woven raffia belt and bracelet. On the figure's back is an enormous sea bird that looks like a cormorant. It is also painted dramatically in the same red, black, and white color scheme as the human figure and decorated with raffia and shells. From its tail hangs a very long, spine-like projection that ends in a fierce mask. Size: 4.9" W x 39.5" H (12.4 cm x 100.3 cm)
