Description:

Indonesia, Bali or Java, ca. late 19th century CE. This is a hand carved wood mask with wide, staring eyes and a pronounced pointed nose. The face is painted pink, with black and red details. Atop the head is a painted crown, and there are curved, black painted details that suggest hair on the side of the face. This mask is from the centuries-old Topeng tradition, made to be worn during the dramatic dances enacted in Bali and to a lesser extent Java that depict traditional stories of kings, princes, heroes, and myths.
