Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Urhobo people (Edo speaking peoples), ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic figure depicting a stylized standing woman who appears to be pregnant. Her body is blocky, with distinctive genitals, protruding stomach, and pendulous breasts. Her head mirrors the blocky forms of the rest of the body, and is topped by a crest-like coiffure or headdress. Her face is decorated with raised marks on the forehead that look like scarification. Wooden figures in this culture were made to be kept in shrines. Size: 4.25" W x 13.4" H (10.8 cm x 34 cm)
