Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand carved wood and horsehair mask with an appealing countenance visage bearing close-set eyes, large ears, nose, and open mouth. The horsehair is set into the chin and cheeks with natural adhesive such as pitch or resin. Traditionally these types of masks were used in animistic rituals such as healing or purification and enabled the shaman to embody the spirits. When not in use, the mask was hung in a house to serve as protection, a thick suspension wire is attached to the verso for display purposes. Size: 9.5" L x 6.5" W (24.1 cm x 16.5 cm)
