Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona or New Mexico, Navajo Peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A fabulous hand-carved and hand-painted wood kachina doll of Tahaum Soyoko or the Black Ogre's Uncle, wearing a terrifying horned helmet mask adorned with bird plumage at the top and a fox fur collar, all while brandishing a bow and arrow. Telescoping eyes project from the mask and a ribbon tied at the bottom forms his slender lips exposing jagged, clenched teeth. Stepping forward with his left foot, the beastly figure wears a long kilt with a sash falling from his side and red yarn wraps around his ankles and wrists. The Black Ogre's Uncle kachina is part of the family of ogre kachinas who serve as disciplinarians for children. During ceremonies, he arrives with the Black Ogre - Nataska or Nata'aska. They dance and brandish their weapons as the Ogre Woman - Soyok Wuhuti - threatens to physically harm people. Size: 3.8" W x 8.8" H (9.7 cm x 22.4 cm)
