Native American, Western United States, South Dakota, Plains Tribes, likely Sioux, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fancy yet threatening wood gunstock war club, a traditional type of weapon made by Native Americans during the 18th to 19th century, which later were made as implements in pow wows, such as this example. The elaborately adorned rod handle has a leather and felt strap, a fur wrap from an elk, copper wires, and a colorful beaded rosebud leather cover that features the emblem used by the Rosebud Sioux tribe of South Dakota. The flared butt end of the stock is adorned with brass rivets, a brass turtle, a brass crucifix applique, jingle bells, and horsehair tassels. Set at a right angle is the iron blade, demonstrating the lethal qualities of this weapon now ceremonial dance implement. Size: 31.5" L x 6.5" W (80 cm x 16.5 cm)
