Description:

Native American, Eastern United States and Canada, Maine and Quebec, Northeastern Woodlands region, Penobscot (Wabanaki) peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden club carved from a root and tree burl and inlaid with wood spikes. Atop the bulbous head and along the handle are layers of pine pitch that are hardened into protective surface. Burl wood was prized when creating wooden weaponry, as the incongruous wood graining imbues the club head with far greater density and structural integrity. As weapons and ceremonial objects, these clubs and similar styles by other tribes have been created for centuries, and later after European contact, the Wabanaki confederacy were known to continue the tradition to sell as folk art. Size: 25" L x 6.5" W (63.5 cm x 16.5 cm)
