North America, Native American, First Nations, Northeastern Woodlands, northeastern Canada and United States, Atlantic Provinces, Gaspe Peninsula, and Maine, M'ikmaq, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fascinating wood totem pole of 3 stylized zoomorphs stacked vertically and surmounted by a firebird, all enveloped in lustrous black, white, yellow, and red pigments. The top avian spans out his wide wings and bends his legs before him; his head displaying a sharply-angled beak and a pair of pointed ears. Only the firebird and the animal beneath it are shown as full figures, while the 2 lower creatures are depicted only as heads. The 3 animals below the firebird all open their mouths exhibiting sizeable teeth. Size: 12.4" W x 20.4" H (31.5 cm x 51.8 cm)
