Description:

Native American, North America, Pacific Northwest Coast, probably Alaskan Inuit, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A remarkable totem pole hand-carved from wood to depict an eagle of thunder bird with a torso of a zoomorphic head seated atop a squatting bear or beaver, all painted in hues of scarlet, black, and chocolate brown over honey-colored woodgrain. The stylized bird presents huge, outstretched wings with intricately sculpted feathers, pointed ears, annular eyes, and a protruding curved beak, as he bends his legs to rest his feet atop the lower animal. Alternatively, the beaver or bear displays an open mouth with fierce, jagged teeth as he grasps an orb-shaped object with his sharp claws and rests his feet on a tiered plinth. Size: 15.8" W x 18.5" H (40.1 cm x 47 cm)
