Description:

South America, Chile, Mapuche culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A gorgeous and furry sheep wool saddle blanket known as a chanuntuku, hand-woven by Mapuche "aranas" or spiders, the honorary name used for weavers. The rectangular panel is constructed using a loom and tied knot technique. The high pile tassels and knotted fringe along the edges would protrude from under the sides of the saddle - probably providing some wind protection to the rider's legs, and the lower piling panels in the center cushioned the horse's back and rider's posterior. These blankets are rare and this a beautiful and well-preserved example of the Mapuche traditional weaving. Size: 47" L x 24.5" W (119.4 cm x 62.2 cm)
