Description:

South America, Chile, Mapuche people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-woven horse blanket made from brightly dyed sheep wood fibers that form a repeating triangular patterning in red, green, orange, and purple on a beige ground. The weaver used a double face technique to create a denser textile, ideal for use as a saddle pad. Note that the purple register is narrower, which might indicate where to center and drape the blanket along the horse's back. The vibrant multicolored textiles from the Mapuche are often eye catching with colorful hues, which would draw attention to the wealth and status of the horse rider. Size: 41" L x 33" W (104.1 cm x 83.8 cm)
