Description:

West Africa, Mali, Dogon peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden ancestor figure standing with a slightly backwards lean atop an integral circular platform. Slender arms trace down the torso from sloped shoulders and meet in front of the waistline, and two vertical flanges flank the front and back of the neck. A curved iron bar is inserted atop the conical head and supports a pair of dangling ornaments from a narrow loop. Thick layers of brown pigment cover the entire figure and create a pleasing presentation. Size: 1" W x 6.625" H (2.5 cm x 16.8 cm); 7.2" H (18.3 cm) on included custom stand.
