Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A "menatse," the Kwakwaka'wakw word for drum, made of hide stretched over a round wooden frame, forming a hoop drum. The hide is held in place with leather straps and the wood is coated in thin, woven, red fabric. The two faces of the drum are painted with a classic Pacific Northwest black and red motif of an eagle, portrayed facing forward, staring directly at the viewer. Drums, as with many instruments in this tradition, are linked with shamanic practice - used to mark the start and end of a ceremony, and, sometimes, to indicate the presence of spirits. Size: 12.75" W (32.4 cm); 15.65" H (39.8 cm) on included custom stand.
