Description:

East Asia, northern Japan, Ainu people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A forged-iron knife known as a makiri used for a plethora of utilitarian tasks by native Japanese Ainu people. The single-edged blade has a deep fuller on each face accentuated with red lacquer, a sharpened edge, and a tang that is secured within a carved wooden handle bearing a bifurcated pommel end. The wooden sheath is decorated with incised linear and geometric motifs including abstract faces along the lower body, and a deer antler ornament is hung from a braided fiber cord attached to the back of the sheath. Size (w/ sheath): 2.625" W x 14.875" H (6.7 cm x 37.8 cm); (blade): 7" L (17.8 cm)
