Description:

First Nations / Native American, Canadian Arctic, Quebec, Nuvuk Islands, Inuit, ca. 1940s to 1960s CE. Signed "Nuyvk" and "E. 9.991" on feet. A wonderful hand-carved soapstone figure of a man holding a seal. Dressed in a heavy coat, thick pants, and snow boots, the bulky figure leans slightly forward and holds both arms in front of his wide torso, grasping his bounty - a large seal with a folded neck and pointed tail - by its flippers. His mouth is held slightly open, as though panting and exhausted from the struggle of capture. Hooded, his sizeable head displays almond-shaped eyes, a rectangular nose, and prominent nasolabial folds. Size: 4.125" W x 9" H (10.5 cm x 22.9 cm)

Provenance: private Littleton, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in 1960; ex-Gladys' Gifts, Barrow, Alaska, USA
