Southeast Asia, Indonesian, Java or Bali, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand carved and painted wood mask depicting a character for the Topeng dance of Indonesia in which costumed dancers don expressive masks while they perform traditional stories about mythical kings and legendary heroes. The Topeng dance originated in the 17th century, and the word "topeng" literally means mask in Indonesian. This example depicts a human visage with a rather happy expression comprised of a bright pink complexion, wide open eyes, arched brows, a bhindi forehead decoration, a protruding nose with openwork nostrils, a toothy red-lipped smile, white earrings, and incised wavy black hair adorned with a central ruby red flower. Size: 7.25" L x 5" W (18.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
