Description:

Indonesia, Java or Bali, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand carved and hand painted dramatic wood mask depicting a principal character who appears in several dances and plays - known variously as the Gumbuh, the Babakan Topeng, or the Javanese Topeng Panji. This mask presents a green complexion, a black crown of hair adorned with golden beadwork, and an expressive visage comprised of openwork, almond-shaped eyes, a pronounced pointy nose, slightly parted red lips revealing golden teeth, and finely delineated black brows, mustache, and goatee. The story of Panji has many versions, but the central theme is the love story between Panji and Candra Kirana (the princess of Daha) which derives from a poem called Smaradanha (meaning Love's Fire). Size: 4.375" L x 5.75" W x 6.75" H (11.1 cm x 14.6 cm x 17.1 cm)
