Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, West Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Dayak, ca. mid 20th century. A standing carved wooden statue often referred to as a hampatong (also called a hempatong, tempatong, kepatong, or epatung) guardian figure or territory marker. The word Hampatong comes from the Dayak word patong which means statue. Most Hampatong figures portray ancestors and supernatural guardians from the Dayak religious system. Each one has its own specific meaning and purpose. This figure was carved in a characteristic abstract style with a rigid standing pose, elongated arms bent at the elbows and hands placed upon his chest, an ovoid head with minimalistically delineated facial features, and an emphasized phallus. Size: 4.35" W x 26" H (11 cm x 66 cm); 27.5" H (69.8 cm) on included custom stand.
