South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A charming pair of brass peacocks that are both decorative figurines but also function as cosmetic applicators. The elegant birds stand on spindly legs upon a domed pedestal, their bodies and wings incised with scrolling floral and feather details. The heads unscrew from the necks for filling the interior body with pigment such as kohl or powdered kumkuma, and the head also functions as the stick applicator wand. One interesting feature of these are the hinged tails - each with cutout patterns that could also function as stencils for creating the perfect bindi or tilaka on the forehead! Both are quite lovely and perfect symbolic display pieces, as the peacock is a symbol of many of the Hindu gods and represents immortality! Size of each (both are relatively similar): 3.8" L x 2.1" W x 4.875" H (9.7 cm x 5.3 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
