South Asia, India, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE; West Africa, Central Mali, Dogon peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A charming set of three brass horses with accompanying riders. The 2 golden-brown figures are of Indian origin and feature integral riders atop the backs of their steeds. One rider holds the reins of the horse while the second rider holds both arms out and grasps a tubular implement in one hand. The largest equestrian figure is of Dogon origin and displays a separately formed rider atop a horse who stands with outstretched legs. The rider dons a conical cap, brandishes a lengthy rifle in both hands, and wears a massive knife and satchel in front of his waist. Size of largest (African): 4.1" L x 2.2" W x 4.6" H (10.4 cm x 5.6 cm x 11.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: Each figure has minor abrasions to horse and rider, with softening to some finer details, and slight bending to some thinner elements on Dogon rider, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout.
