Description:

New World, Guatemala, ca. mid 20th century CE. Carved from a single piece of wood, an unforgettable mask depicting an expressive face, looking very surprised as he peers out from the body of a rooster. The gentleman's visage is comprised of wide open, fully lashed yellow eyes, thick arched brows, a gaping, red-lipped mouth revealing teeth and a protruding tongue, a prominent nose, and laugh lines upon his shocking pink complexion. The artist also created eye slits and openwork nostrils for the wearer. Surrounding this head is a red rooster with wonderfully detailed plumage - both incised and painted with orange, white, and black details - its spread wings flanking the man's face, its head lurking above with nicely delineated eyes, crest, and beak, and its tail below. Size: 20.25" L x 14" W (51.4 cm x 35.6 cm)
