Description:

Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, First Nations, Coastal Salish/Squamish Nation, ca. second half of the 20th century CE, signed by David Henry (active second half of 20th century). A striking hand-carved wooden mask depicting Tsonoqua, the "wild woman of the woods". The face features deeply set eyes that appear to squint, surrounded by deep wrinkles; broad eyebrows; deep furrows down the cheeks and around the mouth; and puckered lips, as if caught in the act of singing. Tsonoqua lures children to her with her siren-like voice - said to be the same as the sound of wind blowing through cedar trees - then grabs them and stuffs them into the basket she wears on her back. She will take them home and eat them if she is able. However, she is also a bringer of great wealth. Size: 7.85" W x 10.75" H (19.9 cm x 27.3 cm); 14.75" H (37.5 cm) on included custom stand.
