East Asia, China, Republic Period, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine hand painted pottery royal attendant figure, molded into a thick upright and forward-facing position. He rests on a flat base with his robes covering his legs and feet, and the hollow, cylindrical body is finely painted with a yellow ocher and mauve robe with intricate black foliate patterns, much like a rich silk brocade. The arms are bent inward, and the white hands protrude from out of the sleeves. The rounded head is painted white with a black eyebrow and narrow pupils, and two raised braids hang down the man's spine. Size: 4.9" W x 8.5" H (12.4 cm x 21.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
