Description:

West Africa, Liberia and Ivory Coast, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An intriguing hand-carved wooden ritual implement known as a "kedie" (sometimes called a "stella") with a flat base, a conical body, and a slender neck surmounted by a Janus head. The body is adorned with attractive incised linear and geometric motifs on the wider sides, stylized male and female features on the front and back, and several incised rings around the neck. The heads are defined by slanted, slit-form eyes, bulbous noses, full lips curled into a slight smile, and finely striated coiffures. Kedie are important ceremonial figures used by village leaders to assist in the judgment of others' actions, and are kept in special shrines when not in use. Size: 2.3" W x 10.9" H (5.8 cm x 27.7 cm).
