Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Neolithic Period, ca. 4500 to 500 BCE. A set of 2 hand-carved stone celts used for utilitarian purposes. First is a pistachio-hued greenstone celt with a slender butt end and a blade edge with one rounded corner indicative of use. The larger celt is carved from dark gray, nearly black stone and exhibits an elongated teardrop-form profile with a slightly curved butt and a rounded blade edge. Size of largest: 9.1" L x 2.7" W (23.1 cm x 6.9 cm)

Provenance: private Friday Harbor, Washington, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: Larger celt has chip to blade head, and greenstone celt has chip to butt end. Both pieces have abrasions and chipping to surfaces, with light surface roughness in scattered areas. Great preservation to overall forms, and nice surface smoothness in most areas.
