Ancient Eastern Mediterranean, Greece, Classical to Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 1st century BCE. A pair of dazzling pieces of gold foil, each from an applique or diadem and adorned with the repousse motif of an anthemion or palmette - a symmetrical group of spreading fronds extending from a singular base - above a border of rondels. These foliate motifs are popular throughout the ancient world and are especially found in architecture and funerary contexts. Size of largest: 1.5" W x 1.6" H (3.8 cm x 4.1 cm); metal quality 62% gold (equivalent to over 14 karats), 31% silver; weight: 1 gram
